Pastor Matt Merfeld
A husband and father with a heart for service, Pastor Matt Merfeld has dedicated his life to family, education, community, and ministry.

Husband & Father
Originally from Kirkland, Washington, Matt met his wife, Crystal (Giles), while studying at Central Washington University. After marrying in 1991, they settled in Crystal’s hometown of Bickleton in 1995 and later built their family home on the family ranch in 2000.

Together they have raised their two children, Kyle (born 2000) and Sarah (born 2003), learning to lean on God’s strength through both blessings and challenges. When Kyle was diagnosed with autism in 2004, the news was difficult but ultimately clarifying, answering many questions about his development.
Over time, Matt and Crystal came to see the diagnosis as simply part of their family’s journey, and Kyle has since taught Matt to engage with others with greater compassion and patience.
Community Member
Matt has been a Boy Scout Leader and a member of the volunteer fire department and enjoys the annual Pioneer Picnic and Rodeo, the car show, and volunteers in a variety of capacities at both events.

Career History
Matt served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps of Engineers and participated in the Army ROTC program during college. After earning his degree, he spent 27 years teaching STEM subjects at Goldendale High School.
Following his retirement from the classroom, he worked for five years in traffic-safety education. He also served as board president for both the Washington Technology Student Association and the Washington Industrial Technology Educators Association.
Pastor
In the summer of 2023, Matt heard God’s call to step away from his long teaching career and become a Commissioned Lay Pastor. Though the transition was unexpected, it has proven both challenging and deeply rewarding. Today he considers it a true blessing to serve the Lord and the Bickleton community in this new role.
